The Yorkshire Dales National Park inspires awe and wonder. It is a fantastic setting for outdoor learning, and we are passionate about encouraging young people to connect with and care for their National Parks. Our learning and engagement team offer curriculum-based outdoor learning visits for all ages throughout the National Park. We have an established offer, detailed on our website, but visits can be linked to any curriculum area. Each session is designed to enhance the wellbeing of the participants through spending time outdoors and encouraging young people to connect with nature.
Sessions are designed to fit in with the school day; a typical day visit runs from 10am to 2pm with half an hour for lunch.
The Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes offers indoor creative and history-themed sessions.
Most of our sessions are free of charge and we can loan waterproofs and other equipment. There is also a small transport fund which you can apply to for help with the cost of coach or minibus travel. We strive to be a welcoming place for all and would encourage groups of all abilities and backgrounds to plan a visit with us. Find out more about our sessions here.
We also provide training for group leaders including primary school staff training sessions, which offer practical advice and resources to enable teachers to run their own sessions. Alternatively, our Ambassador Schools programme supports a small number of schools to embed outdoor learning and environmental education in their setting.
We support young people with awards, such as the John Muir Award, the volunteering element of The Duke of Edinburgh Award and Scout and Guide Awards.
