Yorkshire Dales walking apps

We have two great walking apps which cover the Yorkshire Dales National Park and which have been designed and developed by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. The apps are available for both Apple iPhone and Android phones.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park free walking app

Our free GPS-enabled walking app offers 35 fantastic trails throughout the National Park. The app has great reviews.

It’s designed to appeal to walkers of all ages and abilities and the mix of linear and circular routes are graded to help you make an informed choice of walk and you can make your selection from either a list or map view.

The app’s key feature is an offline mapping tool that allows you to track a walk, regardless of whether there’s a mobile phone signal or not. It also contains essential information such as the Countryside Code, what kit to take, and safety tips, and provides links throughout to more detailed information on this website where needed.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks app

The Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghentIngleborough and Whernside are probably the best known peaks in the Yorkshire Dales and every year are visited by thousands of people.

This app’s key features are routes for the classic 24-mile Yorkshire Three Peaks walk. Not only that, but the app also has routes for all of the individual walks for each peak; Whernside, Pen-y-ghent and Ingleborough. There are also four other walks of varying lengths in the Ribblesdale area so you can stay longer and do some walks with others in your group. These walks are in the surrounding areas of Ingleton, Clapham, Horton-in-Ribblesdale and Ribblehead.

This GPS enabled app provides reassurance by showing your position on the route as your walk as well as showing how far you are around the route. The app will work without a phone signal, it uses your phone’s internal GPS system.

This app has been developed alongside our National Park Rangers who have added the extra walks and also points of interest along the routes of all of the walks for you.

The app includes important safety advice for walking the Three Peaks and the Three Peaks code of conduct, which will help you to stay safe on the walks and help respect our local communities.

The app costs £2.99 to download. The proceeds of this app all go towards helping the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority maintain the Yorkshire Three Peaks network which costs on average, £35 a metre to maintain. You can find out more about where the money goes and the Yorkshire Three Peaks project here.

Everything you need to know about the Yorkshire Three Peaks is on our dedicated Three Peaks webpages.

Important information

  • The apps are not mapping tools. You must take other forms of navigation with you and know how to use them. For the Yorkshire Three Peaks area, we recommend you have an OS Explorer OL2 Yorkshire Dales (Southern and Western) map with you.
  • Using GPS tracking uses more of your battery than normal – do not rely solely on this app when walking.
  • Always be prepared, conditions can change rapidly, particularly in upland areas such as the Yorkshire Three Peaks.
  • You must read the safety information before using the route information.
