Stainmore Railway

The line

Kirkby Stephen East is a historic station and steam railway, which opened in 1861 and served the community around it for 100 years. Now it is cared for by volunteers of the Stainmore Railway Company.

Kirkby Stephen East is one of these special places where it takes you back in time, back to the 1950’s, where steam railway was one of the best ways to get around. You can explore a number of historic Victorian and other vintage locomotives, carriages and wagons, including a glamorous 1930s buffet car (when trains are running) and wander around the small museum.
