The Wensleydale Hotel is a charming family run hotel ideally situated in the Market Place of Middleham. The former White Swan Hotel was taken over by Charles & Fiona Merchie in Spring 2019 when they embarked upon their ambitious renovation project.
Middleham is located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, just a couple of miles from the glorious market town of Leyburn. It’s well known for two things, firstly Middleham Castle, childhood home of Richard the Third. Secondly as the base for one of the County’s largest horse racing fraternities, boasting more than a dozen trainers in and around the town. Everyday of the year you can see the racehorses being ridden up to the Low Moor, past the hotel, for their daily exercise, it’s a special sight worth seeing. You can watch them whilst having breakfast in the restaurant or whilst having a coffee on the terrace.
Rooms in this grade 2 listed building are all en suite and full of character, all have showers, some of these are showers over baths. Every room is different and some feature oak beams, fireplaces and original shutters. Some rooms overlook the Market Place with Middleham Castle dominating the skyline. All rooms offer 32” flat screen TV, Egyptian cotton bedsheets, luxury fluffy towels and Temple Spa Toiletries.
The Tack Room Restaurant offers pan European cuisine drawing on Chef Patron Charles’ experience from all over the world. House specialties include cured salmon, charcuterie, sour dough, and homebred free range rare breed pork. Sample menus are available on the website, and there is something for everyone from British Classics like Pork Wellington, to Classic French like Tarte Tatin & Italian dishes such Tuscan Bean Soup. If you have a particular dietary requirement we will happily make a special menu for you. The emphasis is on quality, and where possible local produce is used including Swinton Estate Grouse, Wensleydale Cheese, & Rhubarb from Middleham!
The hotel bar welcomes with a roaring open fire in the winter, and in the warmer months you can sit on the south facing terrace overlooking the market square and watch the world go by. Cask Ales and a wide selection of wines by the glass are available with a large choice of gins and spirits.
