Swaledale Festival – Guided Walk: The Source of the Swale

May 27 @ 10:15 am - 2:15 pm

Led by Ian Wharton from Keld Resource Centre, a gentle 6 mile walk through easy terrain to the confluence of the Birkdale and Sleddale becks – the source of the Swale. We’ll explore the heritage of Upper Swaledale, including farming, social history and lead mining. We’ll cross the beck (if not in spate) to view the ruins of the Lane End lead mines, plus a visit to the Living Heritage Museum in Keld. Wellies are advised. Dogs on leads are welcome.

Adults £10; Under 25s £3

Places are very limited so please book in advance. If a walk is sold out, you can call our office to add your name to the waiting list. Please let us know as early as possible if you are not going to use your walk ticket; we can’t offer refunds but someone else may be able to take your place.

You’ll need sturdy boots, waterproofs and a hat. For the longer walks bring lunch and water. Coins for ticket machines may be needed. Published durations are approximate. Thanks to the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust, Yoredale Natural History Society, Keld Resource Centre, the Woodland Trust, our walks co-ordinator Charles Collinson, all our walk leaders, and to our generous walks sponsors.
