Learn about the importance of proper lighting practices in minimizing light pollution and its positive impact on wildlife and ecosystems, the climate and human health.

Our expert astronomer, Richard Darn, will offer practical guidance and demonstrations on compliant lighting, the basics of dark sky-friendly lighting, and simple yet effective measures you can take. Our Planners will also be on hand to share advice on our ‘Lighting Guidance’. After the presentation, there will be a chance to ask questions, network, and enjoy a delicious supper.

Background information:

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is proud to be designated as a Dark Sky Reserve, one of 22 in the world, and one of six in the UK, making it one of the best places to experience the wonders of the night sky. The National Park Authority aims to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of lighting to protect our night skies.

Dark sky-friendly lighting on properties and buildings is crucial in maintaining this designation. By using recommended lighting best practices, such as shielding lights, directing them downward, and using lower-intensity bulbs, we can minimize light pollution and its negative effects.
