Sedbergh, Hardraw, and the Kitchener camp rescue in World War II

During the Second World War, a company of German-speaking soldiers were billeted in Sedbergh and Hardraw. These men weren’t Prisoners of War, but British Army troops.
So, what was their history? And how did they come to be in Sedbergh? Join us for a chat and a slideshow with Dr Clare Weissenberg. Clare’s father, Werner Weissenberg, arrived on the Kitchener camp rescue from Germany to Britain in June 1939. Later, Werner found a warm welcome and good friends in Sedbergh and Hardraw while serving in the British army, and Clare is working to find out more about this fascinating – yet largely forgotten – piece of wartime history.
