Mimpish Squimbie Family Trail

Saturday 23 August, 2025 - Tuesday 1 September, 2026

Hidden among the lakeside, rocks, and trees on Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail live the Mimpish Squimbies — a tribe of mythical creatures who watch over and care for the land.

Their name is inspired by the whimsical words of Reginald Farrer, the famous plant collector from Clapham, whose love for the environment and storytelling lives on in these colourful creatures.

Each Squimbie plays an important role — protecting plants, keeping paths clean and helping wildlife. They communicate messages to each other through their World Wild Web. If you listen carefully, perhaps you’ll hear their quiet chatter!

  • Pick up your free Mimpish Squimbie Trail leaflet at the Nature Trail entrance.
  • Follow the map along the Nature Trail.
  • Spot the Squimbie homes and uncover their stories.
  • Finish your journey at Ingleborough Cave.

The linear trail walk is approximately 2.5 miles and will take you around 1.5 hours (although you’d be more than welcome to extend your trip with a visit to the cave!), with refreshments available at the top and bottom of the trail.

The Mimpish Squimbie Trail is along a maintained woodland track that is accessible for most buggies. Mobility scooters are also available — reservations can be made on the Accessibility page of our website. Everyone’s welcome to join the adventure!

This trail was dreamed up and brought to life by local children, artists, and nature lovers; including:

  • Pupils at Bentham and Austwick Primary Schools & Giggleswick Prep School.
  • Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust & SELFA.
  • Illustrator Stephen Waterhouse and Author Maria Farrer.
  • Craftspeople: Peter Barrett, Suzanna Capella, Rachel Benson and David Clark.
