Guided tour of Kingsdale Head
Venue:
Kingsdale Head Farm, Kingsdale Head cottage, Westhouse, IngletonIngleton, Carnforth, LA6 3PH United Kingdom

Kingsdale Head covers 1,500 acres of dramatic upland landscape on the north west corner of the Yorkshire Dales, sitting below Whernside, one of Yorkshire’s famous three peaks. We are taking a different approach to upland management to regenerate a landscape full of life – a farm with rich species diversity and flourishing streams and wetlands.
The tour will take in some of the key features that influence what habitats we have in Kingsdale Head as well as the ways we are working with nature to restore wildlife rich habitats across the site.
We will look at the fascinating role that grazing animals play influencing the range of vegetation and associated life.
As we head further up the hill we will experience the fantastic views Kingsdale has to offer and discover the importance of the peatland and blanket bog that make up a large proportion of the habitat here.
As we head back we will explore some of the mature woodland areas and discuss the significance of the return of trees and scrub at Kingsdale Head, bringing structure and a range of habitats back to the farm .
Other details.
This is walking tour on a hilly, boggy upland farm and a reasonable level of fitness is required.
We will walk at moderate pace with frequent stops to experience the site and discuss what we are seeing. A good level of fitness is best to cope with walking on uneven ground and steep inclines. There are a number of steep slopes.
Walking distance: 2-4 km
The tour will go ahead in most weather conditions. Kingsdale Head is pretty wet even at the driest of times and we will be walking across bog and wet areas. Trousers, sleeve-length tops and robust shoes are required in all weathers, as the ground is uneven and there is tall vegetation. In wet or cold weather, a warm waterproof coat and wellington boots are required.
Suitable for Children 12 and over.
Tea, coffee and water will be available at the end of the tour.
