Access the Dales Festival – Guided Stile Free Walk Old Gang Mine Swaledale

Surrender Bridge, United Kingdom

Join Access the Dales for a leisurely 5-mile circular stile free guided walk around Old Gang mines. This is a walk that is steeped in the history of lead mining in Swaledale in the 19th Century. The Old Gang Smelt Mill in Arkengarthdale was the largest to operate in this area and the main part of what is still standing was built in 1846 and operated until 1907. The ruins are considered to be one of the best-preserved lead smelt mills in the North Pennines and is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The circular route follows the River Swale and passes by the mill before heading out onto the moors. The path rises gently to the indistinct summit of Great Pinseat. This area is strewn with mining spoil and it is easy to think that you are walking on the moon! It is an eerie and mystical place!

This walk is ideal for someone using an all terrain 4×4 wheelchair such as a Tramper or TerrainHopper.

The event is led by a qualified mountain leader, with support from Yorkshire Dales volunteers.

Parking is available at the car parking area at Surrender bridge. (grid reference SD989999: What3words relieves.tags.survived)

A short walk along the quiet road takes you to the start of the bridleway. It is a long, steep (1in 10) climb at the start, but the surface of track is good. It is a challenging accessible walk for those who want an adventure.
