Our very own Dales Countryside Museum is hosting ‘The Final Bite’ as part of the Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival; it is a mini hub event celebrating local produce and has a farmers’ market style this year. This event, showcasing small, local businesses, will run from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 22 September 2019. Entrance to this event is FREE!
We already have a cracking line-up of businesses attending, but look out for more coming soon...
Where to start! We have some marvellous local cheese producers, including start-up business Long Churn Cheese, run by a young couple who produce sheep’s milk cheeses - they will be giving a talk about their journey into the world of dairy-sheep farming and cheese making.
The Home Farmer will also be there - another popular, new business on the scene whose milk vending machines have been a massive hit and who are now set to launch their own raw cheese in September – super exciting!
But as much as we love cheese, it’s also about celebrating all our other spectacular local produce and the wonderful businesses we have here in the Yorkshire Dales – and we want nothing more than to shout about this and to share this with you. So our event also welcomes small gin producers, local ales, local crafts by Stuart Clarkson, feel good food by Bakes and Balls and Springhill Beef and Lamb; and if you would like to try these products you will find them on the Firebox Café special menu for this day only.
Demonstrations and workshops
All of this local produce is very tempting, but we’ve also got some special events for those of you who want something more hands-on…
Have you ever had a go at making butter? Well let me tell you right now – if not, you’re missing out. It’s quicker and easier than you might think! We will be having a demonstration of the art of butter making to show you how to make your own butter. You can sample it on a cracker, or take it home – as you wish.
We also have a felting workshop with That’s Sew Ewe in the museum, where you can learn how to make cute little mice out of felt – as you know there is never cheese without a mouse, or is it there’s never a mouse without cheese? There will be a charge of £10/head for this. The workshop will last for a couple of hours.
Jane Sammels, from Curriculum Kitchen, will also be there making keifer milk – created from fermented milk - which is promoted as a very healthy drink and is very on trend at the moment. Why not give it a try?!
And last, but by no means least, Stage 1 Cycles will be leading a bike activity on the community field! More details to follow soon…
But, it doesn’t stop there. A FREE Truckle Trail will be running from 14 to 22 September around Dales Countryside Museum and through the beautiful Yorkshire Dales town of Hawes. There is so much to explore, including a visit to the newly refurbished Raydale Preserves. We couldn’t have you missing out - if you take part in the Truckle Trail you are automatically entered into a prize draw to win some amazing Yorkshire prizes!
Dairy Days exhibition
Not only all this, but we have our excellent exhibition of the Dairy Days project in the Dales Countryside Museum. This exhibition is the culmination of a two year project to research and share the story of dairying in Wensleydale. The local community has shared personal stories and collections helping to bring the wonderful historic dairying artefacts and archive photographs in the Museum collection to life.
Wow, that’s a lot to get your teeth into, as well as some quality, local cheese, of course!
