Road Closures affecting access to Hawes and Aysgarth National Park Visitor Centre

Friday 10 April, 2026, by News Release

North Yorkshire Council (NYC) is carrying out two separate sets of essential repair works in the area over the coming weeks.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is not carrying out the work; we are sharing this information to support residents, walkers and visitors in planning their journeys.

Both projects involve temporary closures that are likely to affect access to Hawes and to the Aysgarth National Park Visitor Centre.

Major Roadworks at Haylands Bridge, Hawes (Brunt Acres Road)

North Yorkshire Council is undertaking urgent repairs to Haylands Retaining Wall, located on Brunt Acres Road near Haylands Bridge in Hawes. Flood damage has caused partial collapse of the structure, and the road must be closed while repairs take place.

  • Start date: Monday 13 April 2026
  • Duration: Approximately 4 weeks
  • Works: Emergency repair to retaining wall
  • Authority delivering the works: North Yorkshire Council

A signed diversion will be in place, including temporary traffic lights at Appersett Bridge. NYC has advised that the usual weight restriction on Appersett Bridge will be temporarily lifted during the diversion.

The Hawes National Park Visitor Centre and the Dales Countryside Museum will be open.

Impact on the Pennine Way

The Pennine Way will be affected where it crosses near Haylands Bridge. An arrangement has been agreed to allow limited access for walkers.

Pedestrian access is permitted outside normal working hours:

  • Evenings
  • Overnight
  • Early mornings
  • Weekends

Walkers cannot pass through at the following times:

  • 8am–5pm, Monday–Friday

This applies for the full duration of the works.

Alternative route for walkers (during working hours)

During weekday working hours (8am–5pm), when access is not possible, NYC advises walkers to use the following diversion:

A684 west out of Hawes → Appersett → turn right onto Hardraw road → rejoin the Pennine Way

NYC has also published details on One Network
