The main Local Plan text document is accompanied by a set of policies maps. These maps illustrate the various designations or land allocations referred to in the policies. They consist of:
- Allocated development sites for housing
- Allocated development sites for business uses
- Housing development boundaries
- Important open space
- High street frontages
- Protected railway routes
- Conservation areas
- Ecological networks
- Open upland
- Mineral & railhead safeguarding areas
- Bolton Abbey Core Visitor Area
Each of the designations relates to a specific policy in the Local Plan publication text, as set out in the key that accompanies the maps. The key also shows the colour/pattern that corresponds to each layer on the maps, although the maps themselves also have an abbreviated key embedded within them.
The designations are presented on two different types of map: large area overview maps and small area inset maps.
Large area overview maps
These show bigger ‘landscape-scale’ designations on a 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey mapping base. Each map covers an area of around 60 square kilometres and divide the National Park up into 53 sections, as shown in this guide.
There are two sets of overview maps.
The first set displays ecological networks only (due to the complexity of these layers they cannot be shown alongside other layers).

Small area inset maps
There are over 120 maps that show nearly 100 individual settlements/sites where larger scale mapping of more detailed designations can be viewed. This includes housing development boundaries, high street frontages, housing and business site allocations, settlement-based conservation areas and important open space. These maps also show selected designations that also appear on the overview maps. The maps are ordered alphabetically by settlement name.
