Top tips for things to do in Aysgarth and the surrounding area

- When you visit, make sure you witness the three thunderous cascades that make up Aysgarth Falls – especially after heavy rain.
- Visit another popular and easily accessible waterfall in West Burton, Cauldron Falls.
- Tiptoeing through magical Freeholders’ Wood listening for tapping woodpeckers and looking for hazelnuts nibbled by passing dormice.
- Wander up to the attractive medieval church of St Andrews which stands above the River Ure. Pop into the Aysgarth Falls Hotel afterwards for something to eat and drink.
- Yore Mill Craft Shop and Gallery is in the former mill building next to the Upper Falls at Aysgarth.
- Visit the nearby Medieval Bolton Castle where you can learn about falconry, have a go at archery or tour the battlements.
- The villages of Bainbridge, Carperby and Askrigg are nearby with cosy pubs and cafes and the bustling Market town of Leyburn is close by car.
Walks in Aysgarth and the surrounding area of Wensleydale
There are some lovely walks from Aysgarth including a circular walk to West Burton (4 miles), a circular walk to Bolton Castle (6 miles) and Mill Gill Force in Askrigg. Askrigg Bottoms meadow is a fantastic place to wander – Askrigg Bottoms Guided walk here. Ask the staff at the Asygarth Falls Park Visitor Centre for directions, maps and advice, they will point you in the right direction for many more wonderful walks within the area, catering for all abilities.
Walk – Aysgarth woods and waterfalls
A short walk through the woods and returning by the spectacular Aysgarth Falls.
- Features: Low level route (mostly valleys)

Walk – Aysgarth Falls – a miles without stiles walk
The first 500m of this 1.5km footpath runs through Freeholders’ Wood and has great views of the Middle Falls. The surface here is compact aggregate and the width of the footpath is at least 100cm. All gates are fully accessible and there are benches along the route.
From here, a flight of seventy steps provide access to the Lower Falls. Alternatively, the footpath continues for a further 1km along an unsurfaced grass route.
A further 600m route can be followed from the start along an unsurfaced track through the woodland.

Getting there: From Leyburn follow the A684 towards Hawes. Turn right at the Aysgarth Falls Hotel signposted Carperby and Aysgarth Falls. The Aysgarth Falls National Park Visitor Centre is over the bridge on the left-hand side.
Facilities: The nearest public toilets, including RADAR facility toilets, are in the Aysgarth Falls National Park Visitor Centre car park. There are public parking facilities – including four designated bays for blue badge holders – in the Aysgarth Falls National Park car park. Normal charges apply.
