Food Business Toolkit
We have produced a Food Business ToolKit with the North York Moors National Park, Nidderdale
AONB and the Howardian Hills, which provides guidance and advice to local businesses about the
importance of local produce and local ingredients for your business.
We have identified that a unique and authentic food and drink cultural experience can play a significant role in attracting visitors and making their stay all the more memorable. We have created the toolkit for hospitality, local produce and retail businesses, to share some of the ideas of how local food and drink can add to the bottom line and to the quality of your business.

Distinctly Dales handbook
A number of years ago we worked with tourism businesses to identify what made the area distinctive and special and how businesses could use this information to benefit their business. As part of this, we created the Distinctly Dales handbook, available online or in a paper form. It gives tips on how to “local distinctiveness” information to market your business.
We can also provide you with information on what you might need to consider when attracting certain markets, such as information on:
- How to make your business cycle friendly
- How to become a Dark Sky Friendly business
- How your business can help support wildlife conservation
- Going green and the things you might consider
National Park Visitor Centres
Call in and say “hello!” Our Information Advisors at the National Park Visitor Centres are a font of local knowledge and information about your area. Our National Park Visitor Centres are open daily between Easter and the end of October and selected days during the winter months. You can pop in to see them, to gather information, find out about National Park events such as guided walks and our Go Wild! family events, share what you are doing, pick up copies of ‘The Visitor‘ and leave your promotional material for display.
The Visitor magazine
Our annual magazine ‘The Visitor‘ is free and packed full of features and interesting information for visitors. Copies in boxes of 60 can be ordered from the editor, Sarah Nicholson. Or, if you only want a few, just pick some up from our National Park Visitor Centres. If you are interested in advertising in future editions, Sarah will also be able to discuss this with you.
Do I need to apply for Planning Permission?
The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is the statutory planning authority for the area and determines proposals for the development and change of use of land and buildings within the National Park. For more information see the ‘Planning’ section of our website.
