Local Plan 'Have your say'

Consultation No.1 – Setting the agenda

The first consultation on the new Yorkshire Dales National Park Local Plan 2023-2040 has now closed. A summary of the responses is available here and will be used to inform the next stage of the Plan process and we will be launching Consultation No.2 – Exploring our options in Spring 2020.

Every year, Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority receives hundreds of public comments on planning applications. This tells us that local communities care deeply about development in the Dales.

We are now starting the process of creating a new Local Plan, because in 2016 the National Park was extended by nearly a quarter to take in parts of South Lakeland, Eden and Lancaster. The 2016 Local Plan was prepared before the boundary extension took place so it only covers the pre-2016 National Park and not the new extension areas.

Planning application decisions are based on our Local Plan, so, to make sure that we can make the right decisions in the years to come, we need you to let us know what you want to see in it.

We need everyone, regardless of age or income, whether you’re new to the Dales or have lived here all your life, to influence this new Plan, which will guide development in the Yorkshire Dales National Park over the next 20 years.

What can the new Local Plan do?

The new Local Plan can:

  • decide how much development should happen
  • allocate sites for development
  • adapt existing policies or create new policies to guide decisions on planning applications
  • help to safeguard the environment, enable adaptation to climate change, and secure high quality accessible design.

The new Local Plan can’t:

  • guarantee that sites will be developed
  • allocate funding for development
  • address complex issues alone, such as an ageing population or climate change.

We have designed a survey to give us an initial idea about what you would like to see included in the new Local Plan. National Park Authority Members won’t vote on a final version until 2023, giving us plenty of time to hear everyone’s thoughts and ideas.

How to take part in the survey

Online: access the online survey (preferred method).

By hand/post: see the back page of the Winter 2019 issue of Dales, the newsletter for residents of the National Park, or collect a survey and accompanying fact sheet from our offices in Bainbridge or Grassington, or from Sedbergh Library. Return the completed survey to Freepost YORKSHIRE DALES.

This consultation closed on Friday 14 February 2020.

How will my comments be used?

We will use the responses to inform the next stages of the new Local Plan process.  The National Park Authority will not send individual acknowledgements at this stage.
