As the National Park Authority we want to use our expertise and passion for conserving, enhancing and sharing this special place, so that: local people, businesses and organisations will keep the Yorkshire Dales National Park a thriving area; its unique cultural landscape will be treasured for its stunning scenery, exceptional heritage and wonderful wildlife; and, every year millions of people will be inspired to be a part of it.
We are striving to bring the voices of communities, sectors or groups whose voices are not often heard into our discussions. These include young people and people from underrepresented Communities who are often users of the National Park, but are not well represented in our formal structures.

What do Young co-opted members on the Finance & Resource Committee do?
Co-opted members have a seat at the table in our Finance & Resources Committee discussions and Policy Development Forums, along with participation in other relevant events and access to the expert staff of the National Park Authority. They have the opportunity to participate in debate and discussion, bringing their own perspective, skills, experience and influence to our decision-making.
Co-opted members are not eligible to vote on matters at meetings of the Finance & Resources Committee, but are able to fully participate in any debate or discussions held at such meetings. Find out more about the Finance & Resources Committee, including the work it does and when it meets, here. There’s also a meetings archive, here.

Purpose of the role
- Complement, influence, inform and challenge – rather than replace – the role of appointed Members, who remain accountable to the National Park Authority and are ultimately responsible for decision-making
- Support good governance and the broadening of the range of voices involved in the debate about key issues
- Co-optees play specific roles and may be appointed because they have particular expertise or experience that is not well represented on the National Park Authority by other means
- Co-optees also play an important role in advocating and championing the National Park, helping us to reach new, wider and diverse audiences. Such an approach would run alongside existing consultative and engagement methods.
Interested?
Would you be interested in applying for 2026? Co-opted members are appointed for a two-year term, at the end of which they may be considered for reappointment. Any reappointment is subject to a decision of the National Park Authority.
The role will be advertised on our Jobs and Careers page in September/October, every two years. We would love to hear from you!
