Following the decision this week by the landowner to close Burnsall Park (car parking field), visitors are strongly encouraged to consider alternative locations away from that area of the National Park.
Parking availability in Burnsall is now extremely limited and finding a legal parking space will be very difficult, particularly at weekends and during periods of good weather. Also, anyone wishing to visit Bolton Abbey is strongly recommended to book a ticket online in advance, as anyone arriving without a pre-booked ticket is not guaranteed entry.
Police and traffic enforcement officers, supported by National Park Rangers, will be patrolling the area to help keep roads clear, ensuring that access is maintained at all times for residents, businesses, public services and emergency vehicles. They will also be reinforcing responsible visitor behaviour, including not littering and not using barbecues.
Derek Twine, Chair of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority said: “The reality is that without the Burnsall parking field there are very few spaces available for visitors arriving by car. Anyone travelling to Burnsall expecting to find parking for the day, particularly at weekends or during periods of warm weather, is likely to be disappointed. People staying overnight or arriving by public transport will still find much to enjoy.
“The closure is expected to increase demand for parking in nearby villages in Wharfedale, including Linton and Grassington, which are already experiencing high visitor numbers. Visitors are strongly encouraged to think carefully before travelling and consider alternative locations.
“The Yorkshire Dales is a welcoming place, and tourism is a vital part of the local economy with many businesses and communities relying on visitors. However, that welcome must be matched by respect for the people who live and work here, and for the landscape that makes the National Park such a special place to visit.
“As we enter another period of hot, dry weather, there is a continued risk of wildfires and dangers around open water. We are asking everyone to act responsibly: park legally, take all litter home, don’t light barbecues, and take extra care around rivers and other open water.
“By making thoughtful choices about where, when and how they visit, people can help protect both this special landscape and the communities that call it home.”
