Maintain ‘green lanes’ and, where appropriate, manage use by recreational motor vehicles, including enforcing any restrictions imposed by Traffic Regulation Orders.
How the local partners are doing on this objective
Progress:
In 2024 compliance by recreational motor vehicles on sensitive green lanes with permanent traffic regulation orders was at 94%, slightly down from 95% the previous year. Works to improve the surfaces of green lanes have been completed (with financial support from North Yorkshire Council) along Busk Lane & Stake Road Bainbridge, Cam High Road, Hawes and Edge Lane, Long Preston.

Rationale: The use of byways and unsurfaced unclassified roads by recreational motor vehicles is not as contentious an issue as it once was. However, the Yorkshire Dales Local Access Forum firmly believes that it is only through continued careful monitoring, management and maintenance that the current stable situation will be sustained.
