Apprenticeship Opportunities - Stories in Stone

  • 18 months fixed term contract

  • £4.20 per hour for the first year and the National Minimum Wage for age in the second year

  • 37 hours per week

  • Stonedykes Barn, Stainforth

Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) is organising two Rural Apprenticeships based in the Yorkshire Dales in partnership with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA).

The apprenticeships will start between April and July 2018, last for 18 months and be based at the YDNPA Ranger base in Stainforth. They will provide work-based training and trainees will study for a Work Based Diploma (apprenticeship) in Environmental Conservation, at Askham Bryan College, York. Apprentices will also gain a range of certificated skills which are vital in land-based industries and will be assisted with the costs of transport to training.

The scheme is part of YDMT’s Stories in Stone scheme, a programme of community and heritage conservation projects focused on the Ingleborough area and developed by the Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership.

The scheme does not have an age restriction, but applicants must not already have a qualification in a similar field.

Apprentices will need to be able to arrange their own transport to the work base (Stonedykes Barn, Stainforth) and be willing and able to travel to either Asham Bryan College, York or Newton Rigg College, Penrith when required for purposes of the required qualification.

Work-based training and experience

The apprenticeships will all include experience of countryside management skills but will vary according to the nature of the employing organisation or business (see individual job descriptions for more details). Examples of practical activities could include:

  • signposting, waymarking and maintenance of footpaths and bridleway surfaces
  • vegetation control and management
  • moorland management
  • construction and repair of footbridges, stiles, gates, fences and signs
  • dry stone walling, laying cobbles, paved ways and concreting
  • fencing, hedging, ditching and drainage maintenance
  • tree planting, grass cutting and weed control
  • horticultural work
  • use of powered tools and equipment including chainsaws (depending on age)
  • maintenance of historic buildings
  • habitat surveying
  • GIS mapping

Certificated Skills Training

In addition to the Work Based Diploma (apprenticeship trainees will attend certificated short courses (up to a total value of £2000) relevant to the placement organisation, for example:

  • Chainsaw Maintenance: Cross Cutting & Felling Small Trees
  • Brushcutter Use
  • Drystone Walling
  • Pesticide use
  • ATV use
  • First Aid
  • Introduction to Business skills
  • Health and Safety

This list is not exhaustive and the exact courses taken will be discussed with and agreed by the employer and apprentice.

Programme Delivery

The vocational qualification will be assessed at work and at college or another designated site. Attendance at college will be an average of two days a month throughout the scheme on most courses. This may vary seasonally.

Trainee progress will be monitored on a three-monthly basis by college staff, employer and YDMT staff. They will visit the workplace and talk to apprentices and supervisors. This meeting will give the opportunity to discuss the training and any concerns.

Salary

Apprentices will be paid £4.20 per hour for the first year and the National Minimum Wage for their age in the second year. Hours will be 37 hours per week. The cost of transport to training can be claimed from YDMT and there will be some allowance towards personal protective equipment.
