Wet Woods

Wet woodland occurs on poorly drained or seasonally wet soils, usually with alder, birch and willow as the predominant tree species. Wet woods frequently occur as mosaics with other woodland types and with open habitats such as fens. In the Yorkshire Dales National Park wet woods have become increasingly rare due to clearance and drainage however examples of this habitat can be seen at Malham Tarn and at Semerwater. Wet woods are of high biodiversity value. Consequently, this habitat continues to be listed on the UK list of priority habitats for biodiversity action.
