Drystone Walling Demonstration

One of the most recognisable features of the area, drystone walls are prolific across the Yorkshire Dales. Join our Dales Volunteers as they show you the traditional craft of drystone walling. From the foundations to the top stones they will talk you through the process of turning a pile of stones in to something that will last for centuries to come.

A moderate 6 mile (10km) walk to Oxenber and Wharfe Woods, taking in classic limestone country with extensive views and a mysterious wall.

Grinton Mines & Mills

A moderate 2 mile (3.2 km) guided walk to discover the lead mining history of Grinton Moor. Join our expert Dales Volunteers to explore hushes, levels, a flue system and the finest of the smelt mills in the Dales. This route crosses stony ground but is mostly downhill. From the Youth Hostel we will travel in shared vehicles to the start on Grinton Moor. You may be asked to help with transportation.
