Barden Fell

The Bolton Abbey estate owns and manages this huge area of moorland. Grouse have been shot up here ever since it became a popular sport in Victorian times. The Duke of Devonshire has entertained many famous guests on his shooting estate including George V. Read more about the history of the sport on our Out of Oblivion website.

Simon's Seat is a prominent outcrop of millstone grit, visible for many miles around. The name is associated with a story concerning a shepherd boy called Simon.

An open access agreement with the estate allows free access to the moor except when they are shooting, check at Grassington National Park Centre for details. No dogs are allowed except on public rights of way.
