Ruth Chambers, Acting Chief Executive, Council for National Parks
Ruth will set out the current pressures and opportunities for renewable energy development in protected areas. This will include the national pressure for renewable energy development, renewable energy targets, the GDPO consultation, Government policy on climate change, and ENPAA’s statement on climate change. She will respond to the question of whether compromises should be made in terms of our statutory objectives and will give a view on how National Park Authorities can reconcile their duty to protect and the need to facilitate renewable energy development.

Ewan Boyd, YHA Environmental Officer
Ewan will explain the YHA’s motivation for installing micro-renewable technology. Using examples of where this has been done in National Parks and AONBs, he will comment on the YHA’s perception of the issues they have experienced and how problems have been overcome. He will express the view that it is a necessary sacrifice to accept some change to protected landscapes to secure the bigger battle of public engagement in more sustainable lifestyles.

Rob Jarman, Head of Environmental Practices and Sustainability National Trust
Rob will explain the National Trust’s motivation for installing micro-renewable energy infrastructure and the issues it raises for the Trust. Through examples of where this has been done (e.g. Gibson Mill, Wallington Estate) he will focus on the issues and problems experienced and give examples of the solutions achieved.

Andrew Yeats, Principal Architect, Eco-Arc
Andrew will illustrate EcoArc’s experience in delivering renewable energy projects in sensitive landscapes and historic buildings. He will focus on the issues and problems experienced and give examples of the design and technical solutions achieved. He will give a view on the scope for renewable energy development in sensitive landscapes and historic buildings, with a particular emphasis on how technologies used in pioneering buildings can be adapted for use in the traditional vernacular architecture of upland areas.

Rod Edwards, Dulas Ltd
Rod will illustrate, using case studies, the installer's experience of delivering renewable energy development in sensitive landscapes/historic locations. He will also give an outline of the range of technologies available that may be suitable for sensitive landscapes and historic buildings, e.g., hydro, certain solar products, biomass etc. Rod will describe how Dulas and Sundog are working in partnership to deliver micro-generation solutions to the public sector through the Low Carbon Buildings Programme phase 2.

Brian Taylor, Planning Policy Manager, Peak District National Park Authority
Brian will introduce the Peak District National Park’s Supplementary Planning Guidance on Renewables and the lessons learnt from it. He will discuss how successful it has been as a proactive policy tool and in influencing the public and guiding planning decisions.
