Filming in the Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales National Park contains breathtaking scenery that has been used in many films and television series including 'Calendar Girls', 'Robin Hood Prince of Thieves', 'Emmerdale Farm' and 'All Creatures Great and Small'.

More information on the areas used in filming is available from the 'Reel & Staged Dales' section of the Yorkshire Dales Tourism website (opens in a new window).

Filming permissions in the Yorkshire Dales

Filming is allowed without permission on public land.  However, the National Park Authority owns only about three per cent of the landscape.  As the majority of land is in private ownership, you need to obtain permission from the individual landowners if you wish to film there.

The Communications Team will be pleased to offer advice about locations and access, and will help television and film companies to get in touch with the relevant landowners.

If you do film in the Yorkshire Dales, you will be required to supply the National Park Authority with a copy of your risk assessment document for our records.

Filming on National Trust owned land

The National Trust owns a considerable amount of land in the National Park, for example, around Malham Tarn and in Upper Wharfedale.

If you are considering filming on its land, please see the Film & TV location hire section of the National Trust website (opens in a new window).
