Plans, policies and strategies
What are the responsibilities of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority? What does the Authority do to carry out these responsibilities? Who does the Authority work with to look after the National Park? This page introduces a number of key documents that set out the plans, policies and strategies that guide the work of the Authority and the organisations it works with.
National Park Management Plan
The National Park Management Plan is the single most important document for the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It sets out the special qualities of the National Park, the statutory purposes of the Authority and how these purposes will be met in ways that help to support the local economy and local communities.
It sets the framework for the Authority’s own policies and activities and shapes the plans, strategies and actions of all other bodies operating within the National Park who are contributing to the National Park purposes and duty. The National Park Management Plan is supported by a number of more detailed strategies for particular aspects of the National Park, for example: biodiversity; historic environment; woodland; integrated access; education; and interpretation.
The Corporate Plan
The aims of the National Park Management Plan are carried through into specific objectives and actions for the Authority in our annually published Corporate Plan. The Corporate Plan explains in detail the role of the Authority. It sets out what we are trying to achieve, outlines our performance over the past 12 months and shows what we intend to do in the year ahead.
The Local Plan
The Local Plan is the document that contains detailed policies, which are used to assess planning proposals for development and the use of land and buildings. As a planning authority the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is required by law to produce a local plan that covers the whole of the National Park.
