Pignut
Latin Name: Conopodium majus
Family: Apiaceae
The name Pignut or Earthnut refers to the edible tuberous root which used to be gathered and eaten by both humans and pigs. Pignut is one of the most common members of the carrot family (Apiaceae) to occur in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The plant is widespread in meadows, pastures, woods and roadside verges, to above 400m in altitude. The dainty clusters of flowers appear during June and July and can cause a meadow or woodland to appear white from a distance.
