The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is one of a number of organisations that help to look after the National Park. We are legally responsible for conserving and enhancing the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the National Park and for promoting opportunities for understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the area by the public.
From April 2011 the National Park Authority’s budget, and those of many other organisations that operate in the Park, will be reduced, following the Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review.
Most of our funding comes direct from Government and is spent on conserving this very special area and promoting opportunities for people to understand and enjoy its special qualities. The grant provided is being reduced by almost £2 million (or 31%) over the next four years. The Authority does not levy taxes or receive any local funding from Council Tax. With no means to offset any of the cut in grant, our only options are to cut our expenditure by the same amount and / or to increase income from charges etc. We will, therefore, have to take some very difficult decisions about how we use our money in the future.
Changes to our work
We want to continue to provide our key services to a high standard. In order to do so, we will have no choice but to reduce some of our other services and to stop doing some things altogether.
The Authority has carefully considered a range of options and created proposals that would meet the required budget cuts, whilst trying to deliver the statutory purposes of a National Park Authority.
We have recently consulted on the changes to our services, and the impact they may have on the environment, local communities, and the use and enjoyment of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. These draft changes are detailed in the summary changes document and the Proposed Budget 2011-12 Report. We asked people to feedback through an online survey and paper copies were also made available.
The consultation period closed at 10.00am on 10 March 2011 and all responses received before that time will be considered before the final financial decisions are taken at the end of March. A copy of the Authority paper with the recommendations and budget following the consultation is available at www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/authority-mar2011 and a summary of the consultation responses is shown in Appendix 5.
