Bainbridge, 12 June, 2018

The YDNPA’s Planning Committee has granted permission to the Home Office to build two telecommunications masts – in Upper Swaledale and in nearby Birkdale – as part of the major national upgrade of the emergency services’ communications network.

The mast in Upper Swaledale, near Crow Trees Farm, will be a lattice mast, making it capable of hosting several commercial mobile phone operators in addition to the emergency services.  However, it will be up to the mobile phone companies to decide whether or not to use the infrastructure to bring 4G coverage to their customers.

The mast on Birkdale Common will be a telegraph pole which will be capable of hosting one commercial operator.

A total of five Home Office applications for masts in the Yorkshire Dales National Park have now been approved.  For more details see a previous news release here.

Last month, a sixth application from the Home Office was received as part of its Emergency Services Network programme.  The application is for a 15 metre lattice mast at Braidley in Coverdale (application number R/66/101).
