Applegarth, 26 July, 2017

Veteran Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority volunteer Dick Laidler has celebrated his 70th birthday – during a day’s conservation work on the Coast to Coast path.

Dick, from Washington in Tyne and Wear, was presented with a Swaledale tup’s head tankard.

He is a member of the Northern Area Team of Dales Volunteers, which meets on Thursdays with a long-running conservation group, the ‘Ragged Robins’, to work alongside the ranger service.

“The Ragged Robins and Dales Volunteers are a super bunch,” said Access Ranger Ian Broadwith. “They do an untold amount of work in the National Park to improve and maintain the rights of way network. At the last meeting the group put in a good day’s work on the Coast to Coast path in Swaledale, and spirits were high as we celebrated Dick’s birthday.”

The volunteers replaced five old timber step stiles with hand gates, and installed a stretch of board walk where the path had fallen away. The work took place on the part of the Coast to Coast route from Marske to Paddy’s Bridge at the foot of the Applegarth last Thursday (20 July).

Brian Rawling, the coordinator of the Ragged Robins, paid tribute to Dick: “Despite being a Sunderland supporter, he manages to stay cheerful all the time.  Walling is his speciality, but he’ll turn his hand to anything.”
