Events listings site redesigned

Bainbridge, 31 October, 2017

A free online events calendar for the Yorkshire Dales National Park – seen by an average of more than a thousand people a week – has been redesigned and made easier to use.

People looking to get word out about an event – be it a bonfire night celebration, beer festival or art exhibition – can now create an account and publish details of their event within minutes.

Any events which are uploaded before 11 December will be considered for inclusion in the much-loved official printed guide to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, The Visitor 2018.

“Our online events calendar is a fantastic way for local organisations, clubs and individuals to publicise what’s happening – for free,” said Sarah Nicholson, Communications Officer at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA).

“Unlike before, people can take ownership of their listing by returning to it as many times as necessary to make edits, and the new, simpler form is much more efficient.

“Plus there is the chance for events to appear in The Visitor 2018, which will be packed with useful information and great features. It’s read by people planning their trip as well as being picked up by visitors who have already arrived and are looking for great things to do in the Dales.”

An events calendar in various formats has been hosted and managed by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority for nearly 20 years, while the The Visitor has been published since 1981.  A total of 125,000 copies of the magazine are distributed every year via the Tourist Information Centre network and locally through all National Park Centres, B&Bs, visitor attractions and many other outlets. Copies can even be found in places such as the American Embassy in London.

As well as carrying free events listings and features, The Visitor carries paid-for advertising, giving local tourism businesses a channel to promote their business or activity across the UK.  Anyone who would like to take out an advert should contact Sheila Ward at Bow House on 01347 825732 for rates and further information; a free artwork design service is available.

In the past few weeks, local businesses have been booking their slots.

“We have advertised in The Visitor for over thirty years,” said William Bagshaw, Managing Director at White Scar Cave. “The switch to magazine format is a significant improvement to this key Yorkshire Dales publication. We are delighted with the new look.”

John Martin of Parcevall Hall Gardens said: "Without a doubt, advertising in  The Visitor has proved to be a highly effective way of attracting those coming to see the Yorkshire Dales National Park to visit us."
