CC3. By 2011 develop and implement eight walking/cycling routes, each of which links one of the surrounding villages to the local service centres of Grassington, Skipton, Settle, Ingleton, Sedbergh, Hawes, Leyburn and Richmond, so that essential facilities and services can be accessed easily and safely on foot or by bicycle.

Progress update:

During 2007, in partnership with the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District National Park Authorities, Cumbria County Council produced a Rights of Way Improvement Plan for Cumbria.  This identified a number of walking/cycling route improvements in the Sedbergh area.  However, no allocations have been made in the Local Transport Plan for funding and the access authorities are lobbying Natural England and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to provide financial support.

There is a Cycle Plan for the Yorkshire Dales National Park although there is currently no funding specifically allocated for its implementation.  However, through the Service Centre Transportation Strategies money is available to provide facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, subject to the scheme contributing sufficiently to the objectives and shared priorities of the Local Transport Plan.  North Yorkshire County Council is about to consult the residents and businesses in the Settle area on a list of schemes which includes the provision of an 'off-road’ pedestrian and cycle route from Settle to Stainforth.  This route will improve cyclist and pedestrian access from the villages of Langcliffe and Stainforth by segregating cyclists and pedestrians from heavy traffic on Langcliffe Road.
