The theme of this Conference is ‘Compromises and Opportunities’. The main objective of the conference is to promote a healthy debate around the key questions:
- How far should National Parks, AONBs and the National Trust compromise the natural beauty of the landscape and the character and appearance of historic buildings to accommodate renewable energy development?
- What opportunities are available for renewable energy projects in areas of high landscape value and sites of historic importance?
By examining these issues, learning from the experience of successful renewable energy projects, and understanding more fully the opportunities offered by technology, the conference will help delegates to address a number of topical and controversial subjects including:
- Should planning authorities and the National Trust oppose, in principle, those technologies which can have an adverse impact on the landscape and historic environments but encourage less intrusive alternatives?
- What methods can planning authorities in protected areas employ to convey a positive image to the public regarding renewable energy developments and what planning tools are available?
- What are the problems associated with proposals for renewable energy development in sensitive locations? How should planning authorities influence and control renewable energy development in the interest of the landscape or historic environments?
- Should National Parks and AONBs accept more micro-renewable schemes within their area in order to strengthen their position on wind farms proposals on their borders?
- Which technologies are suitable for sensitive landscapes and historic buildings? What design solutions are available and how can the impact of intrusive technologies be mitigated? Can the innovative designsand technologies used in landmark ‘eco buildings’ be adapted for use in traditional vernacular or historic buildings?
- Should we encourage community energy development rather than development at a domestic scale?
