Farm and Countryside Advice

Aberdeen Angus cowThe Farm & Countryside Team aims to provide a comprehensive conservation advisory service to all farmers and landowners in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

With farming undergoing a period of major change and uncertainty, conservation and land management grants are an important source of income for many farmers and landowners.  Being in a National Park – an area of outstanding environmental value - means that there are more grants available (from more bodies) than anywhere else.  Of course, this can also be very confusing.

The Farm and Countryside Team can provide free advice and assistance on the range of grants available and how to apply for them. In particular, the service can help with initial advice and completion of application forms for the new ‘Environmental Stewardship Scheme (Higher Level)’.

Our specialist officers can also prepare the detailed ‘Farm Environment Plans’ that must accompany applications.   Because of the amount of work needed, we have to charge for this part of the service but Defra provide a payment towards the cost. Further details on the Environmental Stewardship Scheme can be found on the Defra website (opens in new window).

Farm Building Design Guide

The Yorkshire Dales National Park has published a Farm Buildings Design Guide which is intended to reconcile the needs of farmers with the functions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. It is intended to stimulate good design, which minimises adverse visual impact, yet produces buildings whose form adequately serves their function.  Click the link below to download a copy of the Farm Buildings Design Guide as a PDF document:
