Marsh Hair Moss

Latin Name: Polytrichum commune

Family: Polytrichaceae

This large green moss can reach over 20cm in height and has the appearance of miniature pine trees. The species can be found in areas of wet woodland and also on areas of wet moorland. The moss has a preference for damp acid soil including peat and often grows alongside Sphagnum moss species. This moss can be commonly found in the Yorkshire Dales National Park including in wet woodland and moorland habitats.
