Giant Bellflower

Latin Name: Campanula latifolia

Family: Campanulaceae

The bellflower family (Campanulaceae) has characteristic bell-shaped flowers and includes popular garden flowers such as Canterbury-bells. The giant bellflower is the tallest species of the genus in the UK and can reach 1.5m in height. It is a truly striking native plant. Although not common in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, it can be found below 400m beside some watercourses, in woodlands or alongside shady road verges where there is some calcareous influence. The impressive pale blue flowers appear from July, and are said to resemble a throat hence the plant is also known as throatwort.
