Coniferous Plantations

These have a combination of pine species, Norway spruce and Sitka spruce, with the latter being the main species planted in the larger blocks of commercial planting. • To maintain and enhance the wildlife potential of existing conifer plantations through continued restructuring and diversification.

Conservation measures

• Review the current biodiversity status of all conifer plantations through collation of existing knowledge and survey work where appropriate.
• Direct expansion of conifer plantations away from habitats of higher nature conservation value.
• Promote forestry management which enhances biodiversity through restructuring and diversification.
