Residentials

2 to 6 June: Flowers of the Limestone

During the weekend visit a variety of habitats and see some of the plants that are special to the Craven Dales. This course assumes you will already have some knowledge of flowers and identification skills.  Led by Judith Allinson. Organised by FSC Malham Tarn.

2 June to 6 June: Painting and Drawing the Limestone Landscape

This course offers you the chance to experiment or develop your use of mixed media to create work representing the wild and man made environments which make up the landscape in this area, from meadows to fell. Course led by Katharine Holmes. Organised by FSC Malham Tarn.

13 to 16 June: Drawing & Painting the Flora of Malham Tarn

A course for anyone with an interest in native flora, Malham Tarn offers a surprising array of habitat. Immerse yourself in a close study of the plant world and learn how to record it in a watercolour drawing. Led by Kate Houghton. Organised by FSC Malham Tarn

13 to 16 June: Limestone Flora

This course aims to explore this specialist flora amid the magnificent Craven scenery, visit a variety of local habitats to gain experience of using keys and identify a wide range of species in the field. Led by Ian Powell. Organised by FSC Malham Tarn.

1 June: Rag rug making - 10.00am-4.00pm

Join rugmaker Karen Griffiths and make a rag rug inspired by the meadows near the museum. Karen will supply hessian, tools and simple frames for you to use.

What you will need to bring: Sharp dressmaking scissors are essential. A variety of old clothes suitable for cutting up. Items such as felted lambswool, cotton t-shirts and silks are all suitable. Greens plus colourful stuff obviously! Furnishing fabrics are not suitable. Dales Countryside Museum. Booking essential. Organised by YDNPA.

1 June: Mill Field Hay Meadow walk. Temple Grounds, Richmond - 2.00pm

Guided walk by Morven Lawson through Mill Field, a traditional hay meadow (classified MG3 Grassland) owned by Dr and Mrs Lawson, Temple Lodge, Richmond. Meet at Yorke Square car-park, Richmond. Organised by Sally Reckert under the Dales, Plants & Gardens project (recording people's memories of domestic gardens and their plants for planting up museum gardens: Richmondshire Museum, Richmond and The Dales Countryside Museum, Hawes, and the St John's Day Centre, Catterick Garrison).

5 June: Malhamdale Wildflower Walk - 1.00pm-3.00pm

Join us for a walk around Great Close Mire Field and enjoy the beautiful wild flowers of Malhamdale. Sturdy footwear essential as surfaces are uneven and gradients steep. Meet at Street Gate. No dogs.  Booking essential. Organised by The National Trust.

7 June: Fern Frolic - 10.30am

A joint event with Yorkshire Fern Group at Attermire/Langcliffe Local Nature Reserves with a possible extension to the Plantlife Winskill Nature reserve. Meet just south of the cattle grid near Winskill at SD834659. Organised by Craven Conservation Group.

8 June: Cumbrian Meander - 9.30am

8 June: Hay meadows of the Yorkshire Dales: Past, present and future - 1.00pm-4.00pm

Tom Lord will lead a walk around his dales farm and talk about the origins of meadows in the landscape and the farming practices that have shaped their development.  Local botanist Dr Judith Allinson will give an introduction to the flora of the farm. Meet at Lower Winskill Farm, grid ref:  SD826664 Directions: Follow the road out of Langcliffe towards Malham.  After about a mile turn left onto a narrow road opposite a lay-by.  The farm is down a driveway on the left at the end of that road. Organised by Plantlife.

9 June: Hay Meadows of the Dales - 8.00pm start

A talk by Dr Pippa Rayner (YDMT).  All proceeds for this talk and our 11 others is in aid of St Andrews Church, Grinton. We can accommodate wheelchairs and the hall has toilet facilities. Held at Fremington Sunday School, Fremington, near Reeth. Organised by Fremington Slide Shows.

11 June: And on that farm he had a barn…and a barn…and a… - 1.00pm-5.00pm

A mostly easy 4 mile (6.5km) walk along the riverside and 'Dales Way' between Kettlewell and Starbotton, looking at the buildings that would have been associated with the original farming practices in the dale.  Meet at Kettlewell National Park car park.  Led by Don McLellan. Organised by YDNPA.

21 June: Haymeadows & Waterfalls - Discovery Walk - 11.00am-3.30pm

A delightful 7.5 mile (10km) walk upstream from Buckden, returning at a higher level with superb views of the dale. Meet at Buckden National Park car park . Booking essential. Organised by YDNPA on behalf of the Grassington Festival.

21 June: Hay Meadow rag rug workshop - 10am to 4pm

Join professional textile artist and teacher Karen Griffiths and be inspired by the beauty and colour of traditional dales hay meadows. You will learn the two traditional rag rug techniques of hooky and proddy and work up your own design based on photographs and paintings. Karen will supply hessian, tools and simple frames for you to use along with paper and coloured pencils.

22 June: Haymeadows & Waterfalls - Discovery Walk - 11.30am-3.30pm

A delightful 7.5 mile (10km) walk upstream from Buckden, through flower-strewn meadows, then at higher levels with superb views of the dale.  Walk ends at Cray. Meet at Buckden National Park car park. Organised by YDNPA.

22 June: West Burton Circular - Guided Walk - 11.00am-3.00pm

An easy 6 mile (9.7km) circular walk viewing Aysgarth upper falls, with views of the middle and lower falls, past Sorrelsykes then returning through meadows to the National Park Centre. Meet at Aysgarth Falls National Park Centre.Organised by YDNPA.

23 June: Wildflower Walk around Muker - 1.30pm-3.30pm

This gentle walk around the footpaths of Muker will allow us to study the plants found in this very traditionally managed part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The walk is led by James Ferguson, Project Officer for the Yorkshire Dales Road Verge Project. This is a new project within the national park investigating methods of good management for the road verges found here. Road Verges are often the last refuges of the natural flora found within an area, and they form vital ‘natural corridors’ for wildlife to both live in and pass through between other sites. Come and find out why and what we can all do to help manage them better! Meet at the public car park in Muker (normal charges apply for those parking there). Organised by YWT.

24 June: Wildflower walk around Southerscales - 1.30pm-3.30pm

This walk will take us to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust site of Southerscales, where we can look at some of the special plants growing there, investigate why they are there, and what we are doing to conserve them. Led by James Ferguson, Project Officer for the Yorkshire Dales Road Verge Project. Meet at the roadside just uphill from The Hill Inn public house (limited spaces available). Organised by YWT.

28 June: Hay Meadow Day - 11.00am - 3.00pm

Visit Yockenthwaite Farm for the day. Wildflower walks, story telling, river bank art event and more. Park on opposite side of the road at Raisegill. No dogs. Wear suitable footwear. Organised by The National Trust.
