Looking after historic features and buildings

The Authority helps look after the incredible historic environment of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Many of the archaeological sites and historic buildings are protected by law but there’s not really a square inch of the Yorkshire Dales that hasn’t got some link to the past so the Historic Environment team have a very wide remit. Not only do they help with planning applications that might damage the special archaeology of the national park, but they are involved in recording and researching it all too. Most of the information is kept on a large database called the Historic Environment Record (HER). We have created a website called Out of Oblivion (www.outofoblivion.org.uk) which contains useful summaries of this database

Current initiatives include a Monuments at Risk Survey being carried out by Dales Volunteers; Historic Landscape Characterisation (a partnership with the North York Moors National Park Authority, North Yorkshire County Council, the City of York, Tees Archaeology and English Heritage) and a Cave Conservation Audit (a partnership with the Peak District National Park Authority, Bradford and Sheffield Universities and English Heritage).
