Closures and restrictions

Temporary closures

There are occasions when a public right of way may need to be temporarily closed for a period, for example to allow restoration works, or for reasons of public safety.  These temporary closures are advertised in the local press covering the area of the closure and also on site.  The period of closure and the alternative routes which are currently in force are indicated on the site notices and maps which can be accessed by following the links below.

Order 2010 No.5 - Footpath No.34 (part) Burton-cum-Walden

This closure is necessary as works are being executed on or near Footpath No.34, namely building and roofing works on part of Forelands House which is directly adjacent to the footpath.

Order 2011 No.4 - Footpath No.13 (part) Kettlewell with Starbotton

The closure is necessary because works are being executed on or near Footpath No.13. The disused water treatment works at Kettlewell adjacent to Footpath 13 are being reinstated. Construction traffic will use the narrow lane that the Footpath follows on a regular basis.

Emergency closures

When public rights of way are found to be in a condition which is dangerous for the public, an emergency closure may be put into operation immediately on that section of route for a maximum of 21 days either to enable it to be put back into repair, or to make a temporary closure for a longer period. These closures are advertised on site. The period of closure and the alternative routes which are currently in force are indicated on the site notices and maps which can be accessed by following the links below.

  • There are no emergency closures in force at this time

Restrictions on Open Access land

Long term restrictions and closures

Maps showing the Open Access land and any long term restrictions and closures can be viewed by selecting from the links below. You should always consult both the map and the restrictions table provided together.

Restrictions placed at short notice

Restrictions may be placed upon open access at any time of year for purposes such as preventing disturbance to breeding birds, land management or fire prevention. These restrictions may be enforced at short notice, so please check before you walk. The Natural England restrictions web page is updated daily and shows all types of restrictions.

Occasionally notices will appear on site to notify the public of restrictions or closures.

Permanent traffic regulation orders

There are a number of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) that are currently in place or are proposed for the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Current TROs

Details of current TROs in place in the National Park can be downloaded below:

Recent TROs

There is a recently made permanent traffic regulation order for Gorbeck Road, which commences on 23 August 2010, and runs between Langscar Gate through to near Langcliffe. The documents below give notice of the making of the order, and a map showing its location.
