Where to get great views of the Yorkshire Dales

There are many places within the Yorkshire Dales National Park where you can stop and admire the view. Below you will find a selection of places where visitors can experience wonderful scenery.

The nearest accessible public toilet facilities are also given with an indication of how distant they are.

Good views of the Ribblehead Viaduct and Whernside (the highest peak in Yorkshire at 736m).  

How to get there: Some formal parking available near the road junction of the B6255 and B6479.  Please do not park on road verges, or drive down the access track to the viaduct.

Hesleden Bergh (SD 877745)

Great views of classic scenery of Littondale.

How to get there: 10km NE of Stainforth, on the road to Halton Gill.

Fleet Moss (SD 859837)

Outstanding views over the moorland towards the ‘Three Peaks’ and Wharfedale.

How to Get there: 7km South of Hawes and Gayle on the road to Hubberholme.

Malham Tarn (SD 895658)

Views over Malham Tarn, the highest natural limestone lake in the country.

How to get there: Take the road North out of Malham, past the Youth Hostel.  The parking area is 5km from Malham South of Malham Tarn.

Scosthrop Moor (SD 864616)

Informal parking area with views over the open moorland and limestone scenery.

How to get there: Take the road SE from Settle towards Kirkby Malham and Airton for 5km.

Longstone Common (SD 694912)

Parking area with interpretive panel and viewpoint to the Howgill Fells.

How to get there: 4km East of Sedbergh on the A684.

Nearest Facilities: Sedbergh (4km)

Rawthey Bridge (SD 711979)

Informal parking area with views over the Howgill Fells.

How to get there: 9km NE of Sedbergh on the A683.

Semer Water (SD 923876)

Good views of the lake and Raydale.  Uneven gravel foreshore area.  Small parking charge made by nearby Low Blean Farm.

How to get there: From Bainbridge, follow the road South, off the A684, sign posted Semer Water for 4.5km.

Parking available alongside this wildflower rich meadow.

How to get there: From the A684, take the road north to Carperby past Aysgarth Falls.  At Carperby turn left and follow this road for 2km.

Redmire road junction (SE 046977)

Informal roadside parking area with views over lower Swaledale.

How to get there: 700m South of Grinton at the junction with the road to Redmire.

Nearest Facilities: Reeth (2km)

Redmire Road, Grinton Moor (SE 038963)

Informal roadside parking with moorland views.

How to get there: From Grinton, take the road South for 700m before turning off towards Redmire.  Follow this road for 2km.

Surrender Bridge (SD 989998)

Informal roadside parking with views of moorland and remains of Surrender lead mill.

How to get there: From the B6270, take the road North from Feetham towards Langthwaite for 1.5km.

Foregill Gate water splash (NY 992008)

Informal roadside parking with views of James Herriott’s famous water splash and surrounding moorland.

How to Get there: From the B6270, take the road North from Feetham towards Langthwaite for 2.5km.

Nearest Facilities: Reeth (7.5km)

Tan Hill (NY 992008)

Informal roadside parking adjacent to the famous Tan Hill Inn, the highest inn in England.  Views over Pennine Moors and to the Cumbrian fells.

How to get there: From Reeth, take the road NW towards Langthwaite.  Follow this road for 18km.
