Microsoft Word files

Reading Microsoft Word files

Microsoft Word is a widely used word processing application; documents saved in Word have the DOC extension and are labelled with Microsoft Word icon.  Many other file formats can be opened by Word including plain text files (TXT, labelled ), rich text files (RTF, Microsoft Word icon) and web pages (HTML).

If you do not have the Word software, you can view and print files using the Microsoft Word Viewer.  This can be downloaded for free from the Microsoft website.

Please note that when you select a link to view a Microsoft Word file in your web browser, the document will open in a new window.

Alternatives to Word

If you need to edit data, save a spreadsheet or create a new file, an open source alternative is available with the Writer program, part of the Open Office suite of applications.  Being open source, Open Office is free to download, use and distribute.  It is compatible with all other major office suites.

If you have any difficulties in accessing DOC files or any other documents available on this website, please contact the Authority's Website Officer.
